In the build-up to Halloween, MyLocalNews is delving into the town’s many stories of strange and spooky goings-on.
The grade II listed manor house, Woodrow High House, which is now used as a leisure centre, is said to be haunted by a spectre that wakes people with electric shocks. Former resident and Lord Protector of the Commonwealth, Oliver Cromwell, is often cited as a possible perpetrator.
The Boot and Slipper pub can trace its history back to the 15th century, with rumours that a 600-year-spirit still lingers. In a submission to Ghost-Story.co.uk, a bar assistant once said, “Staff are too scared to go down to the cellar as there have been times when they feel something brush past, and one guy felt a hand on his shoulder.”
Another centuries-old pub, the Elephant and Castle, is said to have the ghost of its former landlady stalk the halls dressed all in black. Down the years, the apparition has been blamed for pinching barmaids’ bottoms.
