On December 12, voters in Berkhamsted, Chorleywood, Croxley Green and Rickmansworth will elect a new MP.
MyLocalNews asked each candidate four questions to help you make up your mind.
Gagan Mohindra, Conservative Party
Why should people in South West Hertfordshire vote for you?
We need to move on from the paralysis in Parliament and invest in public services for all our communities in South West Hertfordshire. Only a majority Conservative government will secure the strong economy we need to deliver this investment responsibly.
What’s the first thing you will do if elected?
Besides delivering Boris’s deal, I will devote myself to protecting and improving our local area, with particular attention to health care access, transport links, supporting our high streets and infrastructure-led housing (where appropriate).
If you win, where will South West Hertfordshire be in four years’ time?
I will champion value-for-money investment in South West Hertfordshire for better access to healthcare services, while letting you keep more of your hard-earned money and protecting what we love about South West Hertfordshire.
Where do you stand on Brexit?
I believe in democracy. I voted Leave, and however you voted, we must honour the result of the referendum. We must get Brexit done, and then capitalise on the opportunities it gives us.
Ali Aklakul, Labour Party
Why should people in South West Hertfordshire vote for you?
I am working class and a proud socialist. Bereavement meant I became the main breadwinner for my family from an early age. I value hard work and know the importance of community and teamwork.
What’s the first thing you will do if elected?
I would like to hold public meetings to get to know the constituents. I will work vigorously and with integrity to give a strong voice to all those I represent.
If you win, where will South West Hertfordshire be in four years’ time?
I want to see first class education which does not leave students with great debt, great public transport that will reduce pollution, and crime-free streets where the police are properly funded.
Where do you stand on Brexit?
I am a Remainer but believe we must heal the divisions this issue has caused. The UK has always been open to immigration, and this has benefitted us in many different ways.
Sally Symington, Liberal Democrats
Why should people in South West Hertfordshire vote for you?
I’m a Berkhamsted councillor, mother, former finance professional with degrees in Physics and Public Policy who cares deeply about my community and believes in a better way of doing politics.
What’s the first thing you will do if elected?
I will run surgeries all over the constituency and hear what the residents have to say. Only by listening, can we heal the wounds and build a better future.
If you win, where will South West Hertfordshire be in four years’ time?
South West Hertfordshire will have the local Climate Emergency green initiatives implemented, more affordable homes built, small business growth supported, improved rail services and increased funding for schools and healthcare provision.
Where do you stand on Brexit?
We need to remain in the EU to grow our economy, finance improved public services and end austerity. I support a People’s Vote with Remain on the ballot.
Also standing in the constituency is David Gauke, as an Independent and Tom Pashby for The Green Party.
