A St Albans teenager has been arrested and charged in connection with two arson attacks on a community allotment in the city.
The two incidents, which took place on the nights of Sunday, June 25, and Tuesday, June 27, have resulted in thousands of pounds worth of damages to the gardens at Hixberry Lane Allotments.
Crops, sheds, polytunnels and gardening equipment were damaged or destroyed in the blaze.
Police have now arrested an 18-year-old man from St Albans on suspicion of two arsons, possession of an offensive weapon (zombie blade), and possession of cannabis. He has been bailed until Thursday, September 14.
A spokesperson for Herts Police said: “Deliberately starting fires puts people’s lives at risk and diverts the fire and rescue services away from other emergencies. Several allotment holders have been affected by the fires and are being contacted by the Safer Neighbourhood Team.
“Anyone who has any information about the fires is asked to contact safer neighbourhood officer PC Jo Busch at stalbans@herts.police.uk or call 01707 806311.”
