GAME, SET, MATCH: Rickmansworth 16-year-old wins table tennis cup with team for second time

A 16-year-old from Rickmansworth has walked away from a local tennis tournament as a victor for the second time, carrying on his reign as champion from 2019.

Ted Parkes was part of the winning team for this year’s Fairbank Cup, a handicap table tennis knockout tournament organised by the Chalfonts and District Table Tennis League.

It was the first time the tournament has been held for three years, with the editions in 2020 and 2021 being cancelled by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The champion side, Denham Village D, consisted of Ted and his teammate Ollie Britten, a local actor from Mill End, and they won the final of the contest 5-2 against Ickenham URC A on Wednesday, April 20.

Ted and his dad Andrew credit the win to local table tennis hero Richard Cottle, who has been running Denham Table Tennis Club for many years, having nurtured Ted’s talent since the age of 9, along with many other young players.
