Amersham has been selected as one of just 46 UK villages, towns, and cities to enter the Britain in Bloom final, a national competition for community garden projects.
This year, finalists are being judged on their ability to implement planet-friendly gardening techniques within their community projects.
In response, the town’s team, Amersham in Bloom, has placed a keen focus on sustainability and pollinators.
Steve Catanach, Town Clerk for Community and Services at Amersham Town Council, said: “We have changed our watering practices and have installed underground watering systems at many of our sites.
“A new Terracycle recycling scheme has been rolled out, collecting typically unrecyclable household items, like toothpaste tubes and pens.
“Furthermore, we have engaged with local school children to publish Green and Blue, an anthology of short stories and poems to inspire environmental change, as well as working with Amersham School to create a multi-canvas polyptych with the theme of ‘Think Globally, Act Locally’.
“Finally, our legacy tree planting project at Willow Wood was completed. 8,000 native trees have been planted by over 1,500 school children and residents over the past ten years.”
The results to the Britain in Bloom final will be released in October.
