Running three marathons is a feat not many people can achieve, yet a Croxley councillor has smashed it within one month.
Councillor Chris Lloyd spent the month of May running the Milton Keynes, Leeds, and Edinburgh marathons for ovarian cancer charity, Ovacome.
Chris has raised over £2,200 for Ovacome, which focuses on providing support for anyone affected by ovarian cancer, with the aim of reducing isolation, sharing information and promoting knowledge.
On Monday, May 5, Chris ran the fastest time of the three marathons – and his second-fastest marathon ever – at the Milton Keynes marathon, in five hours and 13 seconds.
Luckily in “perfect” weather conditions, the run took him on a two-lap course that finished at the Stadium MK, the home of Milton Keynes Dons.
The Leeds marathon on Sunday, May 11 started and finished in Headingly and the hot and hilly route meant Chris “found it tough after about 16 miles”.
With only a two-week break, Chris was fast approaching his third and final challenge of the month, the Edinburgh marathon on Sunday, May 25.
Starting near the university, the route took Chris past Holyrood Palace and Arthur’s Seat, before along the “wet, windy and sunny” coast.
Interestingly, it was Chris’ seventh Edinburgh Marathon, one of which he ran virtually in Croxley Green during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Catching up with CROXLEYnews after the event, Chris said: “Every year over 7,000 people are diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer.
“I am running to support my friend who has 4th stage ovarian cancer. Running any marathon is tough. running three in a month is crazy. But getting cancer is tough and many of us have friends and family with cancer.”
Ovacome’s community and challenge fundraising manager Imo Simmonds shared with CROXLEYnews: “Ovacome is incredibly grateful to Chris for all his hard work running and fundraising for our ovarian cancer support services over the past 6 months. It’s the amazing action and dedication of wonderful, supportive friends like him that makes Ovacome’s life-changing work possible and allows us to be there for those affected by the disease when they need us most.”
While most of us would be looking forward to a well-earned break after such an arduous challenge, Chris has already signed up for the three marathons again next year.
In October, he will also be doing three more marathons for the Lynda Jackson Macmillan Centre at Mount Vernon Hospital.
