FIRST-CLASS SERVICE: Campaign launched against reduced staff hours at Amersham Library

Published on: 20th February 2025   |   By: Owen Barnard   |   Category: Uncategorized

Amersham Action Group (AAG) has spearheaded a campaign against a recently approved scheme which will change the opening hours at Amersham Library and cut staff working hours.

In January’s edition of AMERSHAMnews, we reported that the Library Flex scheme had been approved. The scheme would increase opening hours at Amersham Library but cut staff hours by around 27 per cent.

According to AAG, 1,591 people signed a petition protesting against the introduction of Library Flex.

In a statement, AAG told AMERSHAMnews: “AAG started a petition due to concern about the introduction of this system without the public being consulted as to whether it should be implemented.

“We contacted councillor Clive Harriss in September requesting a meeting to discuss concerns raised by the public.

“Despite a repeat letter to the councillor, we did not hear from him until December 16, and then only to tell us what we already knew, with no suggestion of a meeting. We would like to point out that more Amersham residents signed a petition demanding a proper consultation than responded to Buckinghamshire Council’s own consultation.

“We now learn that Amersham Library will not have any staff on Thursdays and on Mondays it will only be staffed until 1pm. Our concern was always how this new system would affect vulnerable people and those not as confident in using this system without the help of library staff. Yes library hours have been extended, but the hours that the library staff are available has been substantially reduced.”

Cllr Harriss, cabinet member for culture and leisure, said: “We know some customers want to visit the library when staff are available and the information from the recent consultation has been used to plan staff hours around the times most needed by customers.

“Library Flex offers customers greater choice and flexibility and with opening hours at Amersham increasing from 41 to 94 hours a week, the service will be available to more residents.

“This is an innovative and sustainable model that ensures easy access to council services and support for those who require it.

“I believe we are offering a first-class service within the limitations of the finances available.”
