Chorleywood Parish Council (CPC) has launched its annual campaign to promote and protect ground nesting birds on Chorleywood Common.
In place from Saturday, March 1, to Thursday, July 31, the initiative focuses on protecting vulnerable species, including the red-listed skylark, by requesting that dogs are kept on short leads in designated heathland and meadow areas.
CPC head ranger Daniel Du Gard said: “Chorleywood Common is a vital wildlife refuge in our increasingly urbanised area. With environmental pressures from developments like HS2 and ongoing housing expansion, protecting our local wildlife has never been more crucial.”
CPC’s campaign also includes a public awareness campaign through social media, website updates, local press and on-site rangers.
Rangers and residents have documented skylarks and meadow pipits nesting in Larks Meadow and around Chorleywood War Memorial Hall. Recent decline in breeding success has been attributed to disturbance from off-lead dogs, making the area less attractive for these ground-nesting species.
