Garston residents will be able to join in with one of the fastest-growing sports in the world after plans were approved for five new padel courts.
Padel is a racket sport that combines elements of squash and tennis but is played on a smaller court. It is suitable for players of all ages and abilities.
The courts will be built at Woodside Playing Fields on the site of the former Owls Bowls Club.
The new facility will include two open-air and three covered floodlit courts, as well as a refurbished clubhouse with café, bar and changing facilities. The venue will offer free taster sessions, free hire of equipment for the first few months, and a wide range of coaching programmes, competitions and social events. There will be membership options for those who would like to join the club, and courts will also be available on a pay-and-play basis.
Elected Mayor of Watford Peter Taylor said: “This is fantastic news for local padel players and anyone who wants to try the sport. PadelStars is already delivering high-quality courts across the country and bringing that success to Watford is a big win for our community.”
Construction is now underway and the courts are expected to be open by March 2026.
