FANTASTIC NEWS: Celebration is in order after more than 70 residents help to better their local environment in Watford

Watford Borough Council and Veolia, its recycling and waste partner, supported over 70 residents to take part in litter-pick events in celebration of the Great British September Clean.

The Great British September Clean is an initiative from Keep Britain Tidy that aims to raise awareness on the harmful effects of littering and promote community ownership over shared areas like parks and open spaces.

To encourage volunteers to get involved Veolia provided litter pickers, high-visibility vests and separate collection bags for recyclable and non-recyclable waste.

Dedicated volunteers carefully separated materials as they collected, and a quarter of the 100 bags of litter gathered were taken for recycling.

Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, said: “The Great British September Clean inspired people to volunteer a few hours of their time, to get outdoors, and to clean up some of the litter in their local communities. We were delighted to participate alongside so many willing volunteers who all played their part in helping make Watford a cleaner place to live.”

Darren Harding, Veolia’s Watford senior contracts manager, said: “The Great British September Clean is a fantastic event and every year we are pleased to see how many residents take the opportunity to get involved. This year in particular it has been imperative to look after each other and the planet, and we’d like to thank Watford residents for donating their time to make a positive environmental difference.”

Litter pick kits can be borrowed from Watford Borough Council and Veolia all year round.
