Berkhamsted residents are being given the chance to face off against a former British Under 21s chess champion.
Leslie Tate will visit Open Door community hub on Berkhamsted High Street on Saturday, March 18. The event is open for experienced chess players as well as complete newcomers, and participants will be given a helping hand while playing the former champion. Multiple boards will be set up, with Leslie taking on every player simultaneously. He will move between games and is happy to take on conferring pairs.
Leslie told Berkhamstednews: “It’s a very male-dominated sport. I’m keen to get as many girls down as possible. I’m trying desperately to get my standard back up; I keep losing to the computer!”
Leslie is calling the event Chess for Climate, as he hopes to engender a discussion on the environment and get people to change the way they think about the climate emergency.
He added: “In chess, you’re pursuing endless lines into the future, which is a good way of learning to think. In terms of political thinking and the environmental climate, at the moment we’re only thinking one move at a time, and that’s not enough.”
The event will be free, with a voluntary collection for Open Door. You can book your place on a board by emailing lstate@btinternet.com
