EVENING DARKNESS: Resident concerned about safety over streetlight timings in Abbots Langley

Published on: 6th November 2025   |   By: Naomi Greenaway   |   Category: Uncategorized

Streetlight safety for many is a vital requirement for most residents, whether it’s taking our dogs for a walk or hitting that 5k run after work.

However, for Abbots Langley resident Bethany, she has expressed her concerns regarding streetlight timings across Tanners Wood Lane as some areas have been left in darkness.

Speaking to ABBOTSnews, Bethany told us: “Turning the lights off isn’t just a safety red flag; it’s a green light for anti-social behaviour.”

Bethany told ABBOTSnews that she feared last month’s clock’s going back an hour as this left her, like most, losing an extra hour of sunlight which heightened worries about walking her dog safely, particularly as some local streetlights that were on would be hidden by vegetation.

However, according to Hertfordshire County Council the lights in question operate on a Part Night Lighting schedule, meaning they are turned off between 1am and 5am in the morning on selected streets, including St Lawrence Close, Oak Green, Shirley Road, and Queens Drive.

Yet lights serving key junctions, traffic calming areas, and other safety-critical locations remain on all night, these changes were enforced by the council in August earlier this year.

Hertfordshire County Council says the adjustments align with its street lighting policy and are intended to deliver environmental and financial benefits while keeping safety at the forefront.

Exec member of Highways of Hertfordshire County Council, cllr Stephen Giles-Medhurst said: “We’re keeping safety at the heart of our approach, with lights at key locations remaining on all night.”
