EPIC CHALLENGE: Chorleywood dad cycles 400 miles in four days for charity fundraiser

Published on: 25th July 2025   |   By: Lizzie Ellis   |   Category: Uncategorized

A dad from Chorleywood has completed an impressive cycling challenge, pedalling 400 miles to raise money for Cure Parkinson’s.

Over four days last month, Andrew Parkes cycled from Aberdaron in Wales to Margate in Kent. At the time of writing, he has raised over £5,560.

Andrew was inspired to take on the fundraising challenge because he has seen the impact the disease can have first-hand. He is the primary carer for his mother, who suffers from Parkinson’s disease.

Andrew told Chorleywood News: “I have witnessed the decline of my mum and seen what Parkinson’s does. My mum’s consultant suggested Cure Parkinson’s as the most progressive charity when I asked him. Plus, Cure Parkinson’s founder Tom Isaacs was a local boy.”

Andrew’s training has included daily five- to 10-mile bike rides to visit his mum at Burford Care Home in Chorleywood. He also takes part in a weekly mountain bike ride and beer social with a group of local dads from Rickmansworth Park JMI School, nicknamed The Growlers.

Andrew added: “It’s been wonderful to feel the love and support from all four corners of the globe. Friends and family and others of a similar age relate to the challenges of caring for elderly relatives. Added to this a complex, unpredictable and difficult disease like Parkinson’s – with anxiety and dementia – has made them want to support me. Any amount is a bonus, no amount is too big or too small – it’s all helping to find a cure.”

Andrew was supported throughout his charity cycling challenge by his wife Pippa and children Holly and Ted, aged 21 and 19.
