The sound of swords clashing, fists thumping, and feet stamping will echo through Rickmansworth next month.
But residents have no need to fear – it’s all part of the illusion of stagecraft Rickmansworth Players are bringing to Watersmeet with their upcoming production of Treasure Island.
The show has posed a new and exciting challenge for the Players as, for the first time, they try their hand at stage combat. Under the expert guidance of stage combat specialist Suzie Buckley, the cast have been rehearsing how to fight, fall and move safely.
Speaking to Ricky News, director Sarah Rodrigues said: “Stage combat is one of the biggest challenges of the show, as a number of our pirates have to fight with swords and pistols. Not many of us have done this before, so it’s really important they learn the right techniques.
“Suzie has showed us the important of conditioning and positioning, and what’s safe for our bodies. It’s been a massive learning curve for all of us.
“The cast are exhausted by the end of it, but they’re having an absolute ball with it!”
Sarah stresses that the Players’ production of Treasure Island is not a pantomime or a musical, but a serious drama full of peril.
She added: “When I’m watching the fight scenes, I’m on the edge of my seat! It’s going to make the show really exciting.
“Because the show is quite serious, we wanted that reality and authenticity in the fight scenes so people can really experience all the emotions.”
Treasure Island is on at Watersmeet from November 19 to 22. To find out more, please visit www.treasure2025.co.uk
