DO YOU REMEMBER: Steam trains on the Tube in Chorleywood

Published on: 17th January 2023   |   By: Nik Allen   |   Category: Uncategorized

This historical photo comes from 1996, and depicts one of a series of steam train gala events that saw them returning to the Metropolitan line on the London Underground network briefly.

‘Steam on the Met’ ran annually between 1989 and 2000, with this photo depicting a former Great Western Main Line water tank steam locomotive leading a diesel train on a journey from Amersham to Wembley Park. It can be seen here leaving Chorleywood station.

The Metropolitan line is the oldest line on the current Tube network, with its first stations opening in 1863. It used steam trains on the outer routes all the way up until 1961, when the rails were electrified and the line was cut off at Amersham, having previously lead all the way up to Verney Junction in Buckinghamshire.

Do you have any old photographs of trains in Chorleywood, or any other photographed memories? If so, do send them in to newsdesk@mynewsmag.co.uk, and they could feature in the future.
