DJ BEST: Thousands viewing Kings Langley lockdown concerts

Published on: 22nd April 2020   |   By: Jake Levison   |   Category: Uncategorized

A Kings Langley resident who started performing lockdown concerts on his doorstep says things have gone “a bit mental” as audiences from further afield have started tuning in online.

Bob Best, of Rucklers Lane, decided to put his 30-odd years of DJ experience to good use when lockdown started, by holding weekly concerts for his neighbours every weekend.

Seeing friends on his road dance and sing along from their doorsteps was all Bob was hoping for – so when his daughter’s online video of him surpassed 60,000 views and people from America started tuning in for his weekly concerts, it came as quite the shock.

“It shows how tough times are when my stupid gig becomes a highlight in peoples’ weeks… I’m Bob Best not Bob Geldof for god’s sake,” Bob joked.

The local dad, who owns Kings Langley’s Herts Double Glazing, is having his concerts recorded and uploaded to social media live.

His neighbour, Madelaine Kidd, has helped him spread the word. It’s very much an interactive set-up – he has weekly themes such as 70s, 80s and 90s concerts and takes requests as he goes.

He also uploads his playlists to Spotify afterwards.

He said: “Everyone is bored and wants something to do on the weekends – including me. So it’s win-win to hold these concerts and everyone’s having a laugh.

“It was initially just for Rucklers, but when my daughter uploaded a Tik Tok video of me it got 60,000 views, then a couple of mates from America shared my concerts, so it got a following from that too – people have kind of grabbed hold of it from all around.

“It’s good to interact with people as well. We let people comment so I can call people out live; maybe wish someone a happy birthday or wish someone well. I do the concert every weekend, on whichever day is the nicest weather-wise, and I always play Land of Hope and Glory loudly so that people know the show’s about to start.

“The reaction has been great and so much bigger than I expected – I’ll definitely keep the concerts coming until all this is over. Why not?”
