Two Rickmansworth residents have been recognised by King Charles III in the monarch’s first New Year Honours List.
Professor Lyn Chitty, the country’s only professor of genetics and fetal medicine, has received a damehood for her ongoing services to medicine.
Professor Chitty has conducted pioneering work in pre-natal diagnosis at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London since the 1980s.
She said: “I am really surprised and delighted to be awarded this honour. It is really amazing and I can’t quite believe it, but I don’t believe one gets this level of recognition alone and for me it is very much a reflection of the great people and teams I have worked with over the years.
“My thanks go to them for all the hard work and support they have given. This honour really is a reflection of great teamwork!”
Another Rickmansworth resident to be recognised was Hitan Mehta, who has received an Order of the British Empire (OBE) award for services to the British Asian community as the executive director of the British Asian Trust.
Mr Mehta was a founding member of the trust, which was launched in 2007. Since then, he has been a leading volunteer within his community and has worked on various charitable programmes in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
Mr Mehta said: “I am honoured and humbled by this recognition of my work.
“The British Asian diaspora is a significant part of the United Kingdom, and it has been a privilege to amplify their voices and provide, through the British Asian Trust and through community work, a platform through which I have been able to serve the diaspora.”
