The final judgement on whether plans for 975 new homes in Chalfont St Peter will be permitted has been left to the Planning Inspectorate.

In 2022, the Epilepsy Society applied to convert some of their land in the north-east of Chalfont St Peter into affordable housing, including a primary school and retail spaces.

Now, almost three years later, the deadline for a decision by Buckinghamshire Council has passed, meaning the decision will now be taken by the Planning Inspectorate.

A Buckinghamshire Council spokesperson said: “It is not uncommon for a local planning authority not to make a determination for a proposed development where a number of issues remain to be resolved, as has happened in this case. In such incidences, as part of the planning system, all applicants have the right to appeal and the case is referred to the Planning Inspectorate.

“A future public inquiry for this application will be scheduled to take place, during which time all parties will present their views and the final decision will be made by an independent planning inspector.”

According to planning documents, the proposal was initially made because the Epilepsy Society had been struggling with an unsustainable financial deficit. Without “significant intervention”, the charity is set run out of funds and close by 2030.

The Epilepsy Society aims to improve the quality of life of people affected by epilepsy through research, advocacy and care. Chalfont St Peter has been the home of the charity since it was founded in 1892.
