CLAIM DENIED: Watford Mayor refutes claims over station closure following Shaun Bailey comments

The Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, has denied claims from the Conservative Mayor of London candidate, Shaun Bailey, that Watford Station is under threat of being closed.

It comes after Shaun Bailey posted a video on his Twitter page during his visit to Watford, where he claimed residents are ‘very worried’ about the potential closure of Watford Station.

In the video, he said: “I’ve just been hosted by Dean Russell, who is the MP for Watford and he and his constituents are very worried about the closure of Watford Station.

“Under Sadiq Khan’s poor management of Transport for London’s finances, this station is now under threat.”

However, the Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, has denied these claims.

He said: “There is no threat to Watford Met or plans to close it. When Boris Johnson was Mayor of London the Metropolitan Line extension would have resulted in the closure of the station. This was something Liberal Democrat councillors such as George Derbyshire campaigned against.

“The current Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has scrapped that scheme. Now we need to press for a new scheme that provides this vital link between the Met line and Watford Junction station, while keeping Watford Met station open. The Conservatives either don’t understand the situation of are trying to mislead people.”
