‘DANGEROUS CRIMINAL’: Man jailed following St Albans assault

Published on: 5th February 2026   |   By: News Desk   |   Category: Featured

A man has been jailed for two years after an assault in St Albans. Michael Irving, 29, was sentenced on Monday, February 2, following the attack in St Peters Street last year.

At around 1.20am on Sunday, September 14, Irving was involved in an altercation with another man before punching him unconscious, causing fractures to his cheek and nose.

Following fast work from officers, Irving was seen on CCTV getting into a taxi heading towards Hatfield Road. The vehicle was brought to a stop by officers, and Irving gave a false name before fleeing the area. After a short foot chase, he was found in a dead-end alleyway and arrested.

While en route to custody, Irving urinated and spat in the back of the police van, and was later charged with causing grievous bodily harm (GBH) without intent and criminal damage. At St Albans Crown Court, Irving, of Norwich Road, Ipswich, was jailed for two years, having pleaded guilty to the offenses at an earlier hearing.

Irving was also sentenced to 15 months in prison for an assault that happened in Stevenage, to be served concurrently. Shortly after midnight on December 22, 2024, Irving passed a man who was enjoying a Christmas night out at The Drapers Arms pub before launching an unprovoked attack, punching the victim unconscious. The victim suffered a wound to his forehead, causing a lifelong scar, as well as a broken nose.

Irving pleaded guilty to GBH, which was against a complete stranger and all captured on CCTV.

Detective Constable Luke O’Gorman, from the St Albans Criminal Investigation Department, said: “Firstly, I would like to commend the victims for their support throughout this case. I am pleased to say they are recovering well after suffering awful injuries which required immediate first aid.

“When arrested, Irving showed a flagrant disregard for the law by giving a false name and then attempting to escape officers. Irving is a dangerous criminal and will now have time to reflect on his actions behind bars.”
