CYCLE CHALLENGE: Garston resident cycles nearly 300 miles in memory of late foster son

A Garston resident has taken on an epic cycling challenge to raise money for ADHD charities.

Tracy Wilkes, along with 10 other fundraisers, cycled 288 miles from Ayr in Scotland to Wrexham in Wales from August 1 to 3.

The group were raising money for two charities: ADHDAF+ and ADHDadultUK, which offer help to those with ADHD. Tracy herself was diagnosed with the condition in 2022 and said: “Both charities have been a huge support to me so this is my way of giving something back.”

Tracy, 45, was inspired to take on the challenge in memory of her former foster son, Thomas, who tragically died in a motorbike accident in May at just 19 years old. He had lived with Tracy and her family for two years, and they remained close even after he moved out.

Thomas was diagnosed with ADHD as a child but was not put on medication, as there was a lack of understanding about the condition in the family.

Speaking to Garston News, Tracy explained: “There is still a lot of stigma around ADHD, but undiagnosed, untreated ADHD is life-threatening. People are losing their lives on waiting lists because they’re not getting support.

“Thomas didn’t get the support he needed. I believe things might have been different for him if he had.”

As she didn’t even own a bike until eight weeks ago, Tracy said the fundraiser “really is a big personal challenge”.

Speaking before the cycle ride, she added: “None of us had enough time to train properly, so there was only so much we could do to prepare. I’m nervous, but the support from everyone doing the ride will get me through.”
