A candidate in the Watford Borough Council elections earlier this month was suspended for alleged links to far right movements and white supremacist organisations.
Darren Harrison was standing for the Conservatives in the Tudor Ward, close to Garston, which currently has 26 Lib Dem and 11 Labour councillors.
The national press have accused him of supporting white supremacist organisation Generation Identity and also of having links with the English Defence League’s former leader Tommy Robinson.
Mr Harrison has denied being a supporter of Generation Identity and has been quoted in The Guardian and other titles as saying: “I do not support their views, but support their right to have their views, as I do anyone else, as long as it does not promote violence which to my knowledge, it does not.”
Mr Harrison Twitter account is now inaccessible and he also no longer features on the Watford Conservative party website.
A spokesman for Conservative Central Office said an enquiry had been launched.
He commented: “Darren Harrison has been suspended. An investigation is underway.”
