‘COMMUNITY SPIRIT’: New committee no longer backs proposed padel development in Gerrards Cross

A new management committee has pledged to “revitalise community spirit” in Gerrards Cross.

At an annual general meeting of Gerrards Cross Community Association (GXCA) on Friday, November 8, a new executive board was elected to oversee the long-established community charity.

The board is introducing a new programme of community events, starting with the launch of a Repair Café, the first of which took place on Saturday, November 30.  Friendly, skilled volunteers fixed small household item or showed owners how to repair them for a small donation.

Having been a life-long member of GXCA, new chair Marcia Bell said: “GXCA is a very special community asset. It provides not only a home for special interest groups and sports clubs, but it also hosts a diverse range of community events, as well as hosting one of the largest jumble sales in the UK.

“We have wonderful opportunities to build community spirit and improve the lives of people that might be elderly, isolated, and give them a bit more company and support.”

The new trustees have also announced that GXCA will no longer be backing the proposed padel court development in the town.

In May, the association had supported plans to turn its “little-used” tennis court on East Common into a court for padel, a form of tennis.

The proposal had received many objections, including from actor Robert Lindsay who said nearby residents would “find life intolerable”.

The new president of GXCA Guy Hearn shared: “We’ve listened to members and neighbours and, whilst padel would be a great addition to sports facilities in Gerrards Cross, the proposed site is just too close to homes and our precious Lutyens War Memorial.

“We’re committed to operating public tennis courts and are now seeking funding to refurbish the existing tennis courts.”
