Elected Mayor of Watford Peter Taylor and councillor Tim Williams recently visited one of the county’s oldest chess clubs.
On Monday, November 11, the pair visited Watford Chess Club to support its efforts and encourage more people to get involved.
Founded in 1890, the Watford Chess Club now has more than 60 members and competes in the Four Nations Chess League (4NCL).
Three club members have represented England in junior international events, and the club recently received the accolade of Centre of Excellence from the English Chess Federation.
Watford coach Roger Lancaster said: “The 4NCL includes most of the country’s top players. They tend to gravitate to funded squads and teams such as Watford are at a disadvantage.
“We’re desperately looking for sponsorship and are grateful to the Mayor for supporting us in this.”
Mayor Taylor said: “I was impressed to see so many young members present. I am keen to support local community and sports groups to ensure that a wide range of activities are available in Watford.”
