William Gabain from Bushey served during the First World War

A display of biographies of Bushey servicemen, researched by the Bushey First World War Commemoration Project organised by a team from Bushey Museum, will provide a focus for the children’s activities. Each class has been assigned a particular serviceman to think about throughout the day. Some classes will be visiting local houses where servicemen who died in the war once lived as well as visiting St James’s Church to find some of their graves. Children will be writing imaginary letters home from men serving abroad and members of the Bushey Museum team will be on hand to answer questions. A singing assembly will be held, where a recruitment song written in 1915 by Amy Brooke, who once lived in Coldharbour Lane, will be sung, together with popular songs from the First World War. At the end of the day children will place crosses on the school field in memory of those who died and money will be raised for Hertfordshire Heroes.  Are you marking the anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War?
