Three Rivers District Council has applied for permission to fly the Intersex Inclusive Progress Pride Flag at its Rickmansworth offices. This comes after Conservative councillors said the flag had previously been flown without the required consent and should not be used on council buildings.
The law requires landowners to get advertisement consent, a form of planning permission, to publicly fly flags that are not specifically named in law. The law exempts National Armed Forces Day, Commonwealth, county, council, and the original six-stripe rainbow pride flags from this requirement.
Stephen Giles-Medhurst, Liberal Democrat leader of the council, said: “In the past, there have been some questions over the flags which the council has intended to fly. This application will remove any doubt in the future and bring clarity to this matter.”
However, Conservative councillor Oliver Cooper told RICKYnews: “Women are having to fight for their rights from an overzealous transgender lobby, and it is wrong for Liberal Democrat councillors to fly a radical flag that appears to endorse that. Importing a flag that reflects American culture wars does not support gay rights or restore pride in our community and our country.”
Conservative councillors also proposed a £10,000 ‘flags fund’ last year to help councils’ erect poles to fly the Union Flag and St George’s Flag across Three Rivers.
