Officials hope persistent flooding near the recycling centre on Allum Lane, Elstree, has finally come to an end following works by Hertfordshire County Council (HCC).
In March, RADLETTnews covered ongoing works to identify why some gullies on the street weren’t draining properly. A survey of the drains found that one of the gullies was blocked entirely by concrete and needed replacing.
On Sunday, June 8, councillor Dan Ozarow, Mayor of Elstree and Borehamwood, informed residents that the investigation had concluded and final recommendations had been made.
He said: “This week, work will be carried out to regrade the ditches and ensure that the levels are correct to allow the proper flow of the drainage. This should finally provide a permanent solution!”
These works follow a petition signed by 630 residents earlier in the year demanding action from HCC. HCC agreed to unblock all the drains that were contributing to the flooding and launch a full investigation into the long-term causes so that a permanent solution could be found.
Cllr Ozarow added: “Well done and thank you again to all of you who played a part in our brilliant campaign to win this change.”
A spokesperson for HCC said: “We’d encourage residents to report blocked drains or flooding at www.shorturl.at/Ar9j6 where you can also see how recently each drain has been cleaned. Even if we can’t fix the problem straight away, we can use the information to help us plan our future work programmes.”
