BREW START: Radlett coffee shop gives back to community following flooding

Published on: 27th November 2024   |   By: Nik Allen   |   Category: Uncategorized

A Radlett coffee shop has pledged support for a local homelessness charity as a way of thanking the community for their help.

Brass Monkey on Watling Street was forced to shut on Sunday, September 15, due to flooding. According to owner Warren Lipman, who runs the coffee shop alongside his wife Michelle and manager Vikki, the water reached ankle height.

Warren was so impressed by the community’s efforts to help the shop that he wanted to find a way to give back. He has decided to donate 10 per cent of all art sales from the gallery, which is attached to the shop, to local charity Herts Young Homeless (HYH) throughout December.

Speaking to Radlett News, Warren praised the community for their help. The support they received from local residents allowed Brass Monkey to open the day after the flooding incident, which was caused by a broken boiler above the shop.

He said: “The shop belongs to the community. People are so passionate about it; that’s really overwhelming for us.

“What happened that day was unbelievable. People parked their cars in the layby to help us. Throughout the whole day, we had help.”

Warren said it was a “no brainer” for Brass Monkey to choose HYH as it is a local charity and he himself has a young adult family.

He said: “HYH has been making a difference to the local community who have been so generous during this extremely stressful time.

“We want to help make a difference and hopefully we can in a time of year where so many need help.

“We thought it was a perfect charity to partner up around this time of year.”
