A judicial review into the Mayor of London’s proposed expansion of the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) will begin at the High Court today.
Last year, Mayor Sadiq Khan announced plans to expand ULEZ to cover the whole of Greater London, sparking outrage among the communities in Stanmore, Northwood and Pinner.
If the expansion goes ahead, drivers of cars that fail to meet emission and safety standards set by Transport for London will have to pay a £12.50 fee per day to enter the Greater London Authority boundary from August 29.
This led a coalition of five Conservative-led councils – Bexley, Bromley, Harrow, Hillingdon and Surrey – to take legal action, stating there were five grounds for a judicial review.
The High Court ruled there was sufficient evidence for three of the grounds to consider whether the expansion might be unlawful.
The judicial review is expected to take place today and tomorrow.
