BIG STEPS: Amersham community gathers to celebrate 21 years of walking initiative

Published on: 12th August 2023   |   By: Holly Bullen   |   Category: Uncategorized

Members of the local Amersham community gathered to celebrate the 21st anniversary of the Simply Walk initiative on Friday, July 14.

Simply Walk is a scheme run by Buckinghamshire Council that encourages residents to take part in regular walks. Currently, there are more than 65 walks with more than 2,000 regular participants, including fortnightly walks in Amersham.

To celebrate, an event was held at Hughenden Manor. Guests enjoyed a choice of walks, a celebratory cake, and a picnic, while the volunteer bellringers from the Friends of Langley Park provided music.

Councillor Patricia Birchley, the chairman of Buckinghamshire Council, gave a thank you speech.

After the event, she said: “The dedication and enthusiasm of our volunteers is essential to the success of Simply Walk and without them, Simply Walk would not exist, so I would like to say a huge thank you to them all.”

Councillor Clive Harriss, cabinet member for culture and leisure, said: “Simply Walk provides so much more than a physical activity. Over the years, it has developed into a huge family, providing a warm welcome, friendship and support for so many, particularly during and since the pandemic. Some volunteers and walkers have been involved in the scheme since the beginning, 21 years ago – a huge achievement.”

The walks are free to join. To find out more about becoming a volunteer and view a full list of the walks taking place, visit this webpage.
