BACK SEAT SLUMBER: St Albans man on the hunt for unwelcome guest who napped in his car

A man from St Albans had the fright of his life after discovering a surprise guest in his car.

On the weekend of November 25, John Murphy, 74, was charging his electric car outside his home.

When returning to his car in the early hours of the next morning, he had the shock of his life.

John told STALBANSnews: “I went to move my car and noticed some steam on the window. I went to grab a cloth to wipe the screen but it turns out it was on the inside.

“I was about to start wiping the inside when I noticed a gentleman asleep inside the car!”

John tried to wake the man, but the mysterious visitor refused to stir.

He said: “I tried to manipulate him out of the back door, but then I thought, what if he gets run over? I don’t want to be in a coroner meeting!

“I explained to the police I had great difficulty dragging this dead weight out of my car, as I struggled for more than half an hour.”

As John manoeuvred the unwelcome guest out of the car, the man finally woke from his sleep when he hit the pavement. He was not happy and proceeded to chase John, who had jumped into his car and quickly drove off to make his escape.

It was only then that John realised the man had left his shoes and mobile phone in the car. John contacted the police in an attempt to reunite the sleepy gentleman with his belongings but was told no more could be done.

John has left a sign outside of his home to help spread the word, and hopefully give the man his possessions back.
