Not many students can say they have featured on prime-time telly, but those from Croxley Danes School sure can.
The students were delighted to appear on BBC’s The One Show on Tuesday, March 4, to highlight their participation in Hertfordshire University’s BootStRaP project—a study aimed at understanding the harmful impact of internet use on mental health.
The school welcomed presenter Angellica Bell and the camera crew to the school to interview staff and students.
BootStRaP intends to recruit up to 10,000 young people from across Europe across five years to explore how they use the internet, understand which behaviours may lead to harm, and determine how these can be addressed.
Conducted through a mobile app, it investigates a number of parameters including internet usage time, while also sending participants questions about their health, wellbeing and mood.
More than 100 teenagers from four schools in Hertfordshire, including Croxley Danes – and almost 2,000 young people from across Europe – are already taking part in the project, with the first phase due to be completed in October this year.
Andy Harris, headteacher of Croxley Danes School, said: “While we don’t have issues with phone and internet use at Croxley Danes due to us having very clear rules and systems in place, it is a significant issue outside of school.
“We decided to get involved with the BootStRap project because we think it’s a really fantastic opportunity to gather the data needed to better understand and address issues around problematic internet use. This will inform effective strategies for improving our students’ wellbeing, their online safety, and ultimately their academic success.”
