Aldi for Abbots?

Published on: 27th February 2018   |   By: Jason Allen   |   Category: Uncategorized

Discount supermarket chain is eyeing Abbots Langley as a possible location for a new store, it has been announced.

A list of required towns, published on the supermarket’s website, lists the village as a site inside the M25 that is under consideration.

The German supermarket says it is interested in purchasing freehold, town centre or edge of centre sites suitable for development but is also interested in leasing new or existing space on retail parks, purchasing or leasing space within district centres and existing retail premises.

Members of Facebook group Everything Abbots & Kings Langley were divided on whether or not a new Aldi store would be a good thing for the village.

Catherine Pelley said she was happy with Budgen on Abbots High Street and added that a lot of things would have to be taken into consideration if an Aldi store was to open.

She commented: “Parking would need to be considered as it may result in more traffic to come and shop there. Never been to an Aldi to comment on whether we need it as well as the shops we have already.

Judy Stower said she would be happy with an Aldi as long as it is not near her.

She said: “Am happy if not near me. Presumably not on the High Street. Might kill off butcher, a bakers and other supermarkets? Traffic issue if as big as other Aldis ?”

Paul Meredith echoed Judy’s concerns.

He said: “If this happens it will kill off several independent businesses in the village. We have plenty of supermarkets within the area. Aldi will only come if they think they can get lots of customers, which in practice means lots of cars. Local roads will be gridlocked for much of the day, every day of the week.

“A question for those in favour; which bit of green space would you like to be lost to concrete for this, or alternatively which existing buildings would you like to be demolished?”

Many members questioned where the store would be built.  Several suggested The Brow in Garston where a row of shops has recently been demolished as a possible location.

An Aldi spokesperson said: “We are always considering new locations for stores in areas across the UK, including in Abbots Langley. When we have confirmed a location for a new store we will update the local community.”
