‘ALADDIN’S CAVE’: Popular family-run shop in Chalfont St Peter celebrates 30th anniversary

A family-run shop is celebrating 30 years in Chalfont St Peter, despite a challenging economic climate.

Bucks Leather is a veritable “Aladdin’s cave” selling everything from clothing to handbags, hats, purses and more. It was set up 30 years ago by Danish Chalfont St Peter resident Marianne Walters.

Speaking to Chalfonts and Gerrards Cross News, Marianne said she has always been a “retail girl.”

She said: “I’m from Denmark, where it has always been traditional to have shops which sell a little bit of everything, but when I moved to the UK, that wasn’t the norm.

“When I set up the shop, it was more unusual to do a real mix of things, but it’s more popular now. I always said that if we were to survive, we couldn’t just sell one kind of thing – our slogan is ‘more than just a leather shop’.”

Marianne has been working in retail since her teens and opened her first shop in Princes Risborough, which she closed after 15 years to focus on her Chalfont St Peter shop. She now runs the shop with her two daughters, Mary and Sari, who also live in the village.

She said: “We love Chalfont St Peter – everyone chats and gets together. I always say, I can’t go to the Post Office because I won’t be back for another two hours – I’ll end up chatting to someone!”

The team celebrated their anniversary with bubbles and nibbles on Friday, June 14.
