Folk Festival goes down a storm

Published on: 23rd July 2018   |   By: Jason Allen   |   Category: Uncategorized

The 5th Annual Rickmansworth Folk Festival took place last month with local folk singers and Morris dancers performing for much larger crowds than in past years.

“The word is getting round and more and more local residents are coming to enjoy the performances being put on by local folk singers and Morris dancers who give their time to put on the day” said Michael Stimpson, Chairman of the event.

This year, for the first time, the High Street was closed for a Morris Display. The official opening was outside Watersmeet and the day was launched by the Pals and opened by Patrick Henan, Chairman of Batchworth Community Council. Following the official opening the Morris sides moved into the high street and danced for the shoppers before moving to the car park of the Conservative Club and dancing there.

From noon, groups of local folk singers entertained visitors at Batchworth Lock, the back garden of the Feathers and the Conservative Club in Bury Lane.

The whole day was provided free of charge by the Morris dancers and Folk Singers for the benefit of local residents and visitors to Rickmansworth and the organisers expressed their gratitude to local county councillors and Batchworth Community Council for their support for the event, the balance being collected on the day by voluntary donations from the watching crowds.

In fact, so generous were those watching that the Rickmansworth Town Team CIC will be able to make a contribution to local charity, Colne Valley Special Sailors. CVSS take disabled children and adults sailing on the Aquadrome and are supported each year by Phoenix Morris.

The Morris Sides were Phoenix Morris from Rickmansworth, Merrydowners Morris from North Harrow, Whitethorn Morris from Harrow and OBJ from Bracknell.
