A Berkhamsted care home is calling on the community to help knit a record number of premature baby bonding squares for hospitals across the UK.
As 2025 marks Bupa’s 40th anniversary, Kilfillan House Bupa Care Home in Berkhamsted is joining forces with other Bupa care homes across the country. Their goal is to knit 25,000 bonding squares by the end of the year for babies in neonatal care.
Bonding squares are made in pairs, with one placed with the baby and the other with their mother. These are swapped every 12 hours to encourage bonding through sensory perception.
Rita Busby, 90, a resident at Kilfillan House, said: “I think it’s a lovely idea to share some warmth and support for premature babies. I’ve always enjoyed knitting, so it’s great to be able to put my skills to good use.”
The home is looking for 10cmx10cm squares. Those who would like to visit Kilfillan House to knit with residents can call 01442 877 115, or you can send your squares to Kilfillan House Care Home, Graemes Dyke Road, Berkhamsted, HP4 3LZ.
