Woman making a big splash with new swim school

A woman from Garston who has been coaching swimming and managing swim programmes for more than 20 years has decided to go it alone and offer a service to local people from her own home.

Hayley Munday has set up a family run swim school called Watford Swim School which will specialise in small groups, parent and baby (from four months old) and one-to-one lessons, with the teachers all qualified and experienced.

It was quite a large-scale operation as the swimming pool was craned in over the house. The idea is for the swim school to provide a private and relaxed feeling in a quiet, safe atmosphere for learning.

With free parking and direct access to the pool, shower room and changing facilities, Hayley is hoping to create a popular service for local people.

Hayley said: “As a family we have a strong connection with Watford Water Polo Club where I coach the younger members of the club and my two oldest sons play. I saw a small gap in the market and thought about setting up a swim school.

“People thought that I was crazy, after all, it’s not every day people build a swimming pool in their back garden around ‘our way’.

Our house backs onto our local primary school, Alban Wood, so we had no choice but to crane the swimming pool over the house to get it into place. It caused a ‘real stir’ with people contracting me in disbelief to say ‘is that your pool, you actually did it then’?

“The reception from future customers has been amazing, we have more than 150 people booked in already to start in June 2018. The most exciting interest we have had has come from parents who have children with special needs that will benefit from small groups and a small relaxed environment.”
