Published on: 17th December 2024   |   By: The Newsdesk   |   Category: Uncategorized

This month, My Local News spoke to walking football enthusiast Barry Cottrell following his success with the EWFC (England Walking Football Community) at the recent International Invitational 2024 Walking Football Tournament.

At the end of September, Barry who was born and raised in Watford, represented the EWFA in the over-70s category. The weekend saw 30 teams across various categories representing England, Republic of Ireland, Wales (Cymru Amdani Hi), France, Celtic Nations, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Isle of Man, Gibraltar, Peru and the Caribbean, playing out round-robin events in each age category.

Barry was delighted to be part of the England squad that won all of their matches.

Speaking to My Local News, Barry said “I first got involved with walking football back in February 2017 when 6 of us turned up at Bushey. We now have 35 players registered.

“For England, I played a part in all of the matches and was delighted to receive a winner’s medal. The team also received a winner’s trophy. Next up is the League of Nations in Rome during March 2025”.

Barry hopes the success of many clubs across the country will encourage more players interested in the sport to contact their local walking football club. Anyone thinking of joining can contact Shaun (07870 205940) for more information on attending at The Hive, Barnet or Noel (07505 939685) for more information on attending at Everetts, Watford.
