Staff at Everett Rovers FC were left feeling angry and frustrated after a group of travellers caused havoc the football pitch.
In total, 17 caravans pitched up on the club’s ground in Garston after the travellers broke down the concrete and metal posts which had only recently been installed.
After staying there for about a week, the travellers then smashed their way through some more posts, leaving behind a trail of litter.
To add to the frustration, Everett Rovers were due to be holding a football tournament around the same time, and had to make alternative arrangements at the last minute.
A spokesperson from the club said: “We had just spent thousands of pounds on these new posts, and then something like this happens. When the travellers were ordered off, they smashed down some other posts.
“There was a big clear-up operation by the staff and volunteers after the travellers left behind so much litter.
“We were supposed to be hosting a ladies’ football tournament at the time, so we had to move to someone else’s ground to hold it. We lost so much revenue and more than 1,000 people had to be informed about the last-minute changes.”
Everett Rovers have been working with the council and police following the incident and are looking into placing mud barriers around the pitch to secure it.
The travellers were moved off on June 22.
