THURSDAY ENTERTAINMENT: Hemel Hempstead resident swaps clapping with singing for the NHS

Published on: 10th May 2020   |   By: Geraint Roberts   |   Category: Uncategorized

A resident who lives on Glenview Road in Hemel Hempstead has been lifting the spirits of neighbours by singing for the NHS every Thursday night whilst everyone else claps.

Elizabeth Kirk was persuaded by a friend to start singing on Thursday nights and has now received an overwhelming response, with people thanking her, sending cards, and she’s even received flowers.

Speaking to HemelNews, Elizabeth said: “I was reluctant at first as I didn’t know how it would be received and I didn’t want to enforce it upon anyone. My wonderful neighbour Fiona, who works for the NHS persuaded me and I’m so very grateful she did, as it is the highlight of my week.

“The response has been overwhelming; I have been deeply moved by messages from neighbours and from people further afield who have been following on Facebook. People have said it has become the highlight of their week.

“I have had many cards, postcards and even beautiful flowers from a little boy called Riley. He looks forward to my singing every week, and even learns the lyrics to the song I’m singing.”

Singing for Elizabeth is a way for her to show her appreciation to the frontline workers at the NHS and care homes and stressed how appreciative she is.

“It’s hard to verbalise the gratitude I have for the NHS. Not just the NHS but all key workers from cleaners, supermarket assistants to ICU NHS workers on the frontline.

“You are truly the heroes. All of us wonder if we would have the courage to do what they are doing.”
