A Watford-born journalist has released his debut novel, depicting an enthralling gothic mystery.
Pete Sherlock was born and raised in Watford, which is where his love for creative writing and literature began.
Speaking to WATFORDnews, he said: “Being a journalist, I’ve always been interested in power dynamics and what makes people tick, but my love for storytelling definitely came from my parents.
“I remember my mum and dad taking me to Watford Library after school every Friday afternoon, and I’d take out as many books as I could!”
Pete went on to become an investigative journalist for the BBC, earning several awards and accolades for his work. He completed a 20-week writing course in 2021 with people from all over the world, where he developed his passion for writing.
Pete’s debut novel, The Mask of Merryvale Manor, is inspired by his love for gothic literature and was released last month. Set during the 1960s, it tells the story of 14-year-old Ben, who finds himself at the centre of a murder mystery at his family’s ancestral home.
Pete continued: “I like gothic stories, tales about grand country houses and gothic writers like Daphne du Maurier. Stories that stay with you and get in your bones a bit.
“The first time my publisher, Fairlight Books, sent me a few copies of the book before publication was an amazing feeling. To finally hold it in my hands was surreal but in a good way!”
