After 12 years of being the friendly face behind the counter at Brunch, a beloved fixture of The Marlowes Shopping Centre, owner Phil has announced he will be hanging up his apron this March to begin a well-earned retirement.
Phil, who purchased the then-underperforming cafe over a decade ago, transformed the business into a thriving independent hub. His mission was simple but ambitious: to provide Hemel Hempstead with the best customer service possible, driven by freshly prepared food and a genuine connection to the people walking through the door.
Reflecting on his journey, Phil describes the cafe as more than just a business; it has been a vital “community service.
Phil said: “A lot of people come to us because we have friendly staff who take the time to talk to them, in a world where people can often feel lonely, we’ve provided a happy space for the local community to meet, catch up, and feel welcome.”
The transition from the daily bustle of The Marlowes to retirement marks a significant chapter for Phil, who plans to return to his home country of Australia. While he has enjoyed the perks of UK life, notably the proximity to Europe for travel, he is looking forward to the “freedom, space, and work-life balance” that awaits him Down Under.
Running an independent business through the highs and lows of the last 12 years, including the challenges of the pandemic and a shifting retail landscape, required a constant drive to “refresh and evolve.”
Phil notes that while the loss of major department stores like Debenhams changed the face of the high street, independent retailers like Brunch have survived by offering something chains cannot: a personal, owner-driven service.
As he prepares for his final weeks at the cafe, Phil says he will deeply miss the area and the loyal customers who have become friends.
He said: “I just want to be remembered as a ‘good bloke’ and an asset to The Marlowes community. To all the customers who have supported me over the years, I wish you all the very best of luck, happiness, and health.”
Phil’s retirement in March will surely be felt by the shoppers and staff of Hemel Hempstead, but as he moves closer to family for his next big project… relaxation. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, community spirit, and a very good cup of coffee.
