A summer camp for children set to take place in Kings Langley, has been cancelled following accusations it was being used to radicalise children.
As reported in the August edition of Kings News, Camp Wilayah, organised by Ahlulbayt Islamic Mission (AIM), was aimed at children aged nine to 14 and would take place from August 22 to 25.
However, concerns were circulated after the legal lobby group UK Lawyers for Israel criticised the activities, saying they could incite hate towards Jewish people.
Members of Reform UK, including Keith Steers, chairman of the South West Hertfordshire branch, wrote a letter to the trustees and management of Phasels Wood Scout Camp and Activity Centre, where the camp was being held, to say that hosting the camp was a “grave betrayal” and “a stain upon [their] stewardship”.
On Tuesday, August 12, AIM shared that following discussions with Hertfordshire Scouts and “in light of serious threats levelled at the safety of children at the camp”, the event would not be going ahead.
They shared: “To attack such a wholesome and positive tradition is shameful. Not only is this despicable behaviour, but it is Islamophobia in plain sight, and it should alarm every member of society”.
Boxmoor councillor William Allen shared in a Facebook post: “This was the most appalling example of ‘dog whistle’ politics.”
