Watford fans have been reacting to the news Nigel Pearson will be head coach following the club’s home fixture today (December 7) against Crystal Palace.
The former Leicester City manager was in a similar position back in his two managerial spells at the club but many fans are still sceptical of the “oddball” character.
The 56-year-old is the first English manager at the club since Sean Dyche was in the hot seat in 2012
Season ticket holder Thomas Murphy told Watford News fans need to have more faith in Pearson.
He said: “I think a lot of fans are being a bit harsh about the appointment. We’ve been crying out for a British manager since the Pozzo’s started and now we have one, people are sceptical of it.
“There’s not many other British managers out there apart from the ones that do the rounds to be honest, like [Mark] Hughes and [Tony] Pulis. So out of the current British managers, at least he has had a similar situation on his CV at Leicester.
“I think they only had 10 points at Christmas and he kept them up. Bit of an oddball in his personal life (voted BNP, told a fan to f*** off and the situation with his son in Thailand), but he could be the one to give the players the kick up the arse they need.
“It’s going to be a difficult job for him and we still may go down, but if he improves us, he could be the man to bring us back up.”
On the other hand, Roger Cheshire was surprised by the appointment.
He said on the club’s Facebook page: “What on earth is going on. He was never on the radar as the new manager for a very good reason, no one rated him. From what I have seen of him in interviews, he is a strange chap and the near strangulation of [James] McArthur on the touchline bears this out.
“Since being kicked out of Leicester he has done nothing of note. Ludicrous appointment. Having said all that, if he does get us out of this mess I will be amazed.”
The Hornets are rock bottom of the Premier League with eight points and are another eight points from safety.
They have tough fixtures ahead against league leaders Liverpool on December 14 and Manchester United on December 22, The Golden Boys have their work cut out.
Mark Stevens said the winter transfer window will be key for the new coach.
He said: “I mean he has dug Leicester out of trouble before so it’s a good appointment, but wouldn’t have been my first choice. The key will be the signings in January.”
Lukas Jensen said: “This is exactly what we needed. Someone with a whole lot of experience in both Premier League and Championship. If the players are motivated enough, this should do the trick for a new season.”
