Nearly 800 keen runners turned out in 30 degree temperatures to take part in the Kelly’s Watford 10k at Cassiobury Park this Bank Holiday Monday.
Over 300 children also braved the heat to run 3k & 1k distances.
The stunning route passes largely through shady bluebell woods so runners were able to keep cool
Kelly’s Storage Charity Events paid for and organised the event and every penny raised went straight to Watford Mencap, a local charity who help and support over 800 families by organizing after school clubs for children with learning difficulties. So far the event has raised over £20,000 but the organisers are still waiting for the final figure.
Huge congratulations go to all the winners. First place overall in the 10k race was won by Steve Blakey who narrowly beat Matt Woodward by just two seconds in an amazing time of 37mins.54 secs, closely followed by Chris Mole in 38.51. The winning lady, Sasha Bekin was just 28 seconds ahead of Wendy Walsh in second place & Becca Harwood was third.
Despite the hot weather, Amelia Wallace and her father, Bob, took the opportunity to dress up in Where’s Wally costumes.
The 10k course was also completed by Neil Palmer, a play worker at Watford Mencap.
The whole event has had some wonderful feedback already. Hazel Li wrote
Carol Tunstall from Watford Mencap said “We’re so pleased that everyone had a great time. Our thanks go to the runners, our volunteers who helped us in so many ways and, of course to Kelly’s Storage Charity Events, who, by covering all the costs of this event and working with us every step of the way have enabled us to reach such an amazing total.”.
Moira Martin Director of Kelly’s Storage Charity Events said “ We thoroughly enjoy working with Watford Mencap and are delighted to have raised so much money for them which we know will be really well spent. We are already looking forward to next year’s event!”
