‘HARRODS OF VILLAGE’: Charity shop volunteers in Abbots Langley are ‘the lifeline of the hospice’

The manager of a shop nicknamed ‘the Harrods of Abbots Langley’ has issued a heartfelt thank you to volunteers.

Abbots Langley Hospice Shop, which raises vital funds for The Hospice of St Francis, recently celebrated International Volunteers Day.

The team of more than 45 volunteers help keep the shop running, ensuring it can continue to raise money for the hospice which provides free care for local people with a serious illness and support for their families.

Speaking to Abbots News, shop manager Trevor South said: “Hospice shops cannot run without volunteers. They give up their time out of the goodness of their hearts. They’re the lifeline of the hospice.

“We thank them every time they come into the shop because they make the experience so special for customers. It’s not just a shop, it’s a community meeting point, and that’s thanks to the volunteers and the atmosphere they create.”

Even though the shop has a strong group of dedicated volunteers, Trevor stressed that new people are always welcome.

He explained: “We’re always looking for new volunteers, both young and old. We run a Duke of Edinburgh scheme for students from local schools, giving them their first step into the world of work.

“We also have one volunteer who’s 90 and she says it’s the highlight of her week.

“It gives people the chance to learn new skills and looks really good on your CV. We make sure the experience of volunteering is enjoyable; people can come down, be part of a team, have a cup of tea and a laugh, and help to bring a smile to people’s faces.”
