A world record-holding squash player from Tring has won another accolade after competing at a European tournament in Hungary last month.

Having grown up at the squash club his mother created in the 70s, it was no surprise that Alex Preston would go on to excel in the sport.

He explained: “Apart from being born into squash, it’s so convenient. You can play all year round and fit a game in 40-minute slots.”

Alex joined Tring Squash Club in 2013 and has toured the globe for various competitions over the years.

In 2022, Alex and his fellow Tring Squash Club member Michael Pearce secured a Guinness World Record for the longest squash marathon, singles. The dedicated duo played for a whopping total of 40 hours and one minute. Their record is yet to be beaten.

Earlier this year, Alex took part in his first European Masters event in Porto, where he secured third spot overall.

From Friday, March 14, to Sunday, March 16, Alex took part in his second European Masters event, the Hungarian Squash Masters in Budapest, where he won all four matches and secured the top spot.

He said: “It feels good! The European tours are so social as you get to play the whole weekend and visit places you haven’t been before.

“I was quite nervous to play my absolute best and not slip up. I felt like the strongest player in the final.”

Alex was joined by other English players, who all supported each other during the tournament. He said that there was a “great atmosphere”, with players and fans alike supporting and cheering each other on.

He continued: “The club were so happy and excited for me! It has such an amazing community.”

Alex explained that to qualify for the World Championships next year, he needs to gain a reputation in the squash world at European events. With two victories under his belt, he will focus on getting more wins throughout the year.

Tring Squash Club will be hosting their Tring Squash Club Championships throughout May, with the final on Friday, May 23. To find out more, visit www.tringsquash.com
