GOOD-TO-EAT: Community fridge launched in Berkhamsted to combat food waste

A new scheme to stop food from being wasted in the community is beginning tomorrow (November 29).

Open Door, a community and arts space on Berkhamsted High Street, is launching a new Community Fridge initiative.

Perishable food which would otherwise be wasted will be collected from shops and hospitality in Berkhamsted and give out for free.

The fridge is open on Tuesday mornings, with plans to open on another day in the future, from 10am to 12pm.

An Open Door spokesperson said: “According to government figures, if the good-to-eat food that is currently wasted was redistributed, it would feed everyone in food poverty in the UK for at least half a year. This will provide a means to reduce food waste, as well as enabling the most vulnerable and in need to have access to good food, before it goes to landfill.”

The fridge can be found situated outside the front of Open Door, 360-364 High Street, Berkhamsted, HP4 1HU.
