‘GOOD NEWS’: Watford MP Matt Turmaine shares his February column

The MP for Watford, Matt Turmaine MP shares with My Local News his column for February.

“I was out and about last month at Watford Junction and Bushey in January’s cold weather.

“Train travellers are benefitting from the government’s rail fares freeze. So, I alongside local volunteers and Labour councillors visited both stations, leafleting and speaking with passengers to publicise the news.

“It’s the first time rail fares have not risen in 30 years – that’s as far back as John Major’s day for those who remember him and has saved commuters from Watford Junction to Euston, for example, over £230 this year.

“We’ve had a bit more good news too with the announcement of proposals to relocate cancer services from Mount Vernon to Watford.

“That would deliver a world-class purpose-built facility to the hospital site in Vicarage Road and there’s another potential big benefit.

“It is a golden opportunity to provide a welcome shot in the arm and greater impetus to the plans to build Watford’s long-awaited new hospital.

“By dovetailing in the Mount Vernon move which I support wholeheartedly, this will achieve economies of scale and the proximity and availability of the site can only have a beneficial effect on the readiness of the Watford scheme to move ahead.

“Within months of taking office, this government provided the necessary £12m in funding for the power supply needed to be installed to help construct the new hospital.

“It may surprise you to learn that this basic requirement had not been achieved in the previous 14 years!

“There’s also good news for motorists.  This time of year, is historically peak pothole territory. Things need to change.

“I’ve supported a massive financial boost for Hertfordshire County Council, not just for repairs, but to invest in proactive and preventative maintenance to fix our roads for good.

“The Lib Dem-run council will be publicly held to account to ensure improvements.”
