‘FORCED INTO POVERTY’: Data shows Bushey is among most unaffordable town for renters

Bushey and the surrounding areas have been named among the most unaffordable places to rent in the UK.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has compiled data showing the proportion of tenants’ income spent on rent in each local authority.

The data was released on Monday, October 28, and marks the first time ONS has conducted such research.

Both Watford and Hertsmere are included in the top 30 most unaffordable places to rent in the country. The data defined unaffordable as being somewhere where 30 per cent or more of your income was needed to pay the rent.

Watford came 28th overall nationally with median rent standing at 35.5 per cent of the median income.

Meanwhile, Hertsmere was even more unaffordable at 36.6 per cent, placing the area in 25th place overall.

The data, which covers the year to April 2023, included all 334 local authorities in the country.

Top of the unaffordable list was Kensington and Chelsea at 52.2 per cent, while North Lincolnshire at 18.8 per cent was at the opposite end of the table.

Bushey resident Elliott Coneran said: “More needs to be done to make housing more affordable.”

Ben Twomey, chief executive of campaign group Generation Rent, said: “Landlords can raise the rent as high as they can get away with while using the threat of a no-fault eviction to bully their tenants.

“These figures show that it works for them, with renters being forced into poverty and homelessness as a result.”
